Waukesha Cuts in the Fire Department ranks would put staffing levels at the downtown station below nationally accepted safety standards for fire protection, the firefighters union president contends in a letter issued Monday.

The letter was released one day before the politically fractured Common Council convenes work on a difficult 2006 budget. Fiscal conservatives are expected to clash with Mayor Carol Lombardi tonight as she argues to keep cuts to jobs and city services to a minimum. The budget must be completed by the council on Nov. 15.
