The ease with which Veronica Jerikova lofted the shot put during tryouts for the Kenosha Tremper track and field team was what drew a crowd around her three years ago.

That was when Tremper throwing coach Kevin Aronin saw the potential in Jerikova for her to win the WIAA Division 1 discus title last season with a school-record toss of 130 feet 4 inches.

Jerikova was also second in the shot put last season, and that event was what first drew coaches to her.

"When we saw her throw 30 feet without any form, we drafted her," said Aronin, who added that he was one of several people who crowded around Jerikova to watch her throw. "She had no idea what a glide was, or a power throw was or whatever. She's really grown since then."

Jerikova was undefeated in both events going into the state meet last year but placed behind Nicolet's Angela Wigley in the shot put. Jerikova's toss of 40-7 was more than a foot shorter than that of Wigley's (42-0).
