Quiet Zones Proposed to Muzzle Train Horns

City of Pewaukee - Aldermen on Monday voted to explore establishing quiet zones to silence train horns, but noted that residents near the train tracks would likely be the ones to pay to install alternative safety features at the crossings.

City Planner Harlan Clinkenbeard said those costs could be anywhere from $100,000 to $250,000 for each of four crossings near the Springdale Estates and nearby subdivisions, where residents have protested the noise. About 861 residents in the area could be charged $464 to $1,160 for the safety devices. In addition, annual maintenance charges are estimated at $1,500 to $3,000 per crossing, he said.
