Summary


Faced with a budget squeeze for 2006, the Milwaukee Common Council loosened the pressure on city services Friday by finding room to partially restore Mayor Tom Barrett's proposed cuts to firefighter staffing as well as some cuts in other areas.

But the move on the firefighters may simply postpone the decision until the 2007 budget, when the deeper staffing cut and others like it may be needed as the city faces rising costs and state-imposed tax and spending caps.

In other votes, the council used unexpected room under the tax caps to restore some funding for street maintenance.
