Washington As Congress takes up renewal of the USA Patriot Act, House Judiciary Chairman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr. says his committee is unlikely to make permanent all the new police powers in the hotly debated law, as the Bush administration has requested.

Instead, Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) said in an interview that he expects some controversial provisions to be extended, but with time limits, giving Congress the chance to revisit them in the future if it feels those powers have been misused.
