Infant conjoined twins from Sheboygan were separated Wednesday night after nearly 12 hours of complex separation surgery at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., an effort that brought together more than 65 health care workers and culminated months of waiting by the parents.

Early this morning, the final steps of the surgery were being completed with the closure of Mateo and McHale Shaw's massive surgical wounds, the hospital said. Surgeons were able to completely close each boy's back and buttocks. Both had received successful colostomies, too, the hospital reported.
