Summary


Wisconsin lakes and rivers used to be dotted with small summer cottages used by weekenders and vacationers for fishing or hunting or just sitting by the lakeside and getting away from it all. Not so much anymore. Now, McMansions, smaller homes and multi-unit condos that people live in year-round are springing up like mushrooms. The landscape of Wisconsin has changed, and the state's regulations governing shoreline development need to change with it.

That should happen next Wednesday, when the state Natural Resources Board will be asked to approve the first significant rewriting of waterfront zoning regulations in 40 years. The new rules proposed by the Department of Natural Resources will simplify matters for property owners while providing added protection for the state's waters. They deserve approval.
