Truckloads of snow and determination couldn't match sunshine and 52 degrees in Hayward on Wednesday, forcing American Birkebeiner officials to shorten their vaunted ski race from a marathon to a dash.

For the second time in the event's 34-year history, the Birkebeiner will end at Highway OO just outside Seeley, 23 kilometers from the start and 28 kilometers from the usual finish on Main St. in Hayward.
