"When we got off the phone (Thursday), we knew he was going to leave the Brewers," general manager Doug Melvin said.

Melvin placed that call to Lee's agent, Adam Katz. He made what he and owner Mark Attanasio considered a serious, competitive offer, which Melvin said approached the four-year, $52 million deal the Boston Red Sox gave slugger David Ortiz in April.
