Madison Key Republican senators oppose an Assembly-passed constitutional amendment to limit state government spending opposition that will make it hard, if not impossible, for the Senate to approve it in the final week of the legislative session.

Early Friday, the Assembly endorsed limiting future spending by state government's general fund, which totals more than $20 billion this year, to 90% of the three-year average growth in statewide personal income.

Spending Limit Could Hit a Wall; Support of Amendment Looks Too Weak in Senate

The amendment passed by the Assembly on a narrow 50-48 vote would have allowed state general fund growth of about 3.3% this year, or an additional $660 million, according to the Legislative Fiscal Bureau. Assembly Republicans scrapped a tighter limit, which would have generated about $480 million more this year.
