Storm Team 4; Trend Is Toward a Calmer November

Summary

November is considered by meteorologists to be a month of great variability, with periods of calm Indian summer weather followed by heavy, wet snowstorms or strong, windy low-pressure systems. The month is beginning like a lamb in the Milwaukee area, with highs in the 50s on Day 1 and in the 60s for today and the rest of the week. A low-pressure system from the south should bring some rain to southern Wisconsin by Sunday, and those showers could mix with snow in northern Wisconsin by Sunday night.

Although this month has produced strong storm systems that have actually been named because of their adverse effects, the pattern lately for November has been somewhat quiet. Most folks are familiar with the November storm that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975 on Lake Superior or the famous Armistice Day blizzard of 1940 or perhaps the Freshwater Fury of 1913. Lately, this month has been lacking these types of intense low-pressure systems. The general trend for this month has been for higher temperatures during the past 15 to 20 years. For instance, the warmest November on record in Milwaukee occurred in 2001, and four of the 10 warmest on record occurred since 1994.
