Beginning tonight, residents in four Milwaukee County suburbs will be asked to weigh in on a looming question: Should their local libraries remain in the decades-old system that gives them unfettered access to every municipal library in the county?

The communities Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield and Brown Deer have threatened to secede from the Milwaukee County Federated Library System over the cost of reciprocal borrowing, or lending among member libraries. And each has scheduled a public hearing, the first in a series of steps required by state law to break away.
