Economic Signs Point to Sustainable Recovery Durable Goods Gains Stronger Than Expected

There are encouraging signs that the U.S. economy could begin to recover soon and that it will be more sustainable than it was before the recession, area economists said Wednesday.

The Commerce Department said that orders for durable goods -- manufactured products expected to last at least three years -- increased 3.4% last month, much better than the 2% decline economists expected.
