For thousands of fans celebrating Independence Day in Milwaukee this summer, Ben Folds put on the ultimate fireworks show. The featured headliner at Summerfest on July 4, Folds pounded through an extensive set of piano-infused power-pop that conveyed juvenile elation one minute and world-weary melancholy the next. The 38-year- old singer and pianist who burst on the scene in 1995 with his trio, Ben Folds Five, and had a hit with the wrenching song "Brick" two years later co-headlines a sold-out concert tonight with Rufus Wainwright at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Ill. Folds chatted with Journal Sentinel reporter Piet Levy and devout fan Catherine Danenberg about songwriting, personal lyrics and William Shatner.
