Two explorers attempting the first-ever unassisted summer crossing of the Arctic Ocean have encountered three polar bears and gained only 32 miles after 18 days of slogging through deep snow and across wide openings in the ice.

Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen, a Cedarburg native, now face a decision whether to cut short the expedition, said Ann Possis, manager of the One World Expedition.
