Summary


Before authorities start seriously considering whether and how much water should be pumped out of the Great Lakes basin for thirsty communities such as Waukesha, they should first determine whether and how much water is being wasted thanks to a federal dredging project in the St. Clair River near Detroit. If the numbers in a recent private study are confirmed, Waukesha is essentially asking for pennies while the feds (stop us if you've heard this one) are responsible for sending whole dollars down the drain.

Hence the need for a federal study as proposed by a Michigan congresswoman to figure out just what is happening in the lakes. Rep. Candice Miller, a Republican whose district sits on the Lake Huron shoreline, is right when she argues that the effects of the dredging project could be at least as serious as any of the diversions being talked about and that the project deserves the same attention.
