A little Zen, a little love, a little poetry and a bit of good cheer. Some classics, some contemporaries, some unknowns, some classics-to-be. And some - well, just plain good stories. This is what's in our basket of goodies for readers this holiday season.

Instead of pontificating about the best books of 2007, this year we asked a handful of writers and other bibliophiles in Wisconsin which books they'd recommend as wonderful gifts. Their choices, in fact, are for giving - and reading - any time, new and old favorites that they themselves would love to wrap up or to open and read again.

The Title Quest; Book Lovers Tip Us Off to Something Old, Something New

They were asked to suggest two books, one old and one new. The titles came spontaneously, quickly, from all of them - from bestselling novelist Jane Hamilton to young memoirist Danielle Trussoni, from poets Maurice Kilwein Guevara and Ted Kooser, from librarian Paula Kiely, from two local booksellers and others. Some wanted to list more than a pair. "Only two books!! How terrible!!!" Hamilton wailed in a teasing e-mail before she sneaked in a couple more titles.

So, here they are - a mix of people, a variety of tastes, a breadth of titles.
