As a young boy in Laos, Neng Yang hungered for a better life.

His father, one of thousands of Hmong soldiers who fought against Communist forces in the CIA-sponsored secret war in Laos, died when Yang was a baby. Destitute and desperate, the boy ate whatever he could, even spiders in the dirt.

"We had no food, no clothes, no medicines, no leaders," Yang recalls, his eyes swelling with tears.
