Kohl's Corp. shares declined Thursday after the retailer said that December sales fell short of the mark and warned that earnings would be lower than expected for the final three months of the year.

The Menomonee Falls department store chain was among a small group of retailers with lower-than-expected gains in December. Most chains said same-store sales were slightly better than expectations, for an industrywide gain of 3.2% for the five-week period, based on a tally of 66 chains by the International Council of Shopping Centers.
