Summary


Colder air has settled into Wisconsin for the next few days, with clouds at times and high temperatures in the low 40s to mid-30s in much of the state. Flurries and light snow are possible in northern Wisconsin, but it doesn't look like enough to bring a new blanket of tracking snow for opening day of deer hunting.

Winter storms are a fact of life in Wisconsin during the cold season, and they are my Winter Awareness Week topic for today. Northern Wisconsin averages six winter storms each winter, and the southern part of the state averages about three. Winter storms could be heavy snow, blizzards, ice storms, heavy sleet or a combination of all of those. Storms could move in as low-pressure systems such as Alberta clippers or Panhandle lows, or they can be heavy lake- effect snow events in extreme northern Wisconsin near Lake Superior.
