Madison is known for its popular Dane County Farmers Market, for concerts on the Capitol lawn and for its beautiful lake setting, all of which suggest summer. But there is much to do in winter as well, and it has long been a puzzle why more Milwaukeeans don't take the easy ride west for a little break from freeway construction, tax season and other wintry ills.

What to do: Central Madison is made for walking. Stroll up and down State St. and through the University of Wisconsin campus, and take the time to stop in the Memorial Union and the big-shouldered Wisconsin Historical Society building on the Library Mall.
