Joliet, Ill. Dan Wheldon won a race, set a record, turned the Indy Racing League title chase into a formality and received a serious reminder about perspective all on the same Sunday afternoon.

Wheldon started the day with the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the fourth anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on his mind, and just 21 laps into the Peak Antifreeze Indy 300, he drove through the scattered pieces of rookie Ryan Briscoe's shattered car. Once Wheldon was convinced that Briscoe had not only survived but was relatively healthy, he could comfortably celebrate his accomplishments at Chicagoland Speedway and throughout this impressive third season.
