Maybe the state blinked or maybe state officials simply decided to do the right thing and put public safety first. Whatever the case, the driving public is the winner with the state Department of Transportation's decision to finish widening Greenfield Ave. in Waukesha County.

As Lisa Sink reported in a Journal Sentinel article last week, the state has widened Greenfield Ave., state Highway 59, from Calhoun Road to Highway 164, except for a half-mile segment that straddles the Town of Brookfield and New Berlin. The state left a half-mile from Barker Road to Baythorn Way at two lanes -- the rest expanded to four lanes -- because the town refused to pay the amount sought by the state.
